◆ 구름속을 걸었던 지리산 무박종주 ◆ 지난주 군자산을 다녀오며 다음주 지리산 무박종주를 진행하는지 물었더니 김사장님이 "이번 지리산 무박종주산행은 인원에 관계없이 무조건 진행합니다"는 얘길 들었다. 6월16일 밤늦게 짐을 꾸려 집을 나선다. 토요일이라 그런지 늦은 밤인데도 거리에는 많은 차들이 다닌다. 출발지에서 가면서 각 승차지점에서 타시는 산님들과 반가운 인사를 나눈다. 화원ic를 벗어난 버스는 거창휴게소에서 잠시 휴식, 식사를 못하신 산우님들이 포장마차에서 간단한 요기를 한 후 부지런히 달려 2월17일 새벽3시경 성삼재에 도착한다. 앞에 도착한 다른 산악회 산우님들은 벌써 주차장을 넘어 노고단 방향으로 진행하는것이 보인다. 38명의 우리 산우님들도 버스에 내려 산행준비를 하고 일찍 마친 몇몇 산우님들은 노고단으로 향하고있다. 칠곡의 젊은산우와 3시 10분경 주차장을 지나 노고단방향으로 진행하기 시작한다. 부는 바람이 춥게 느껴져 바로 조끼를 입고 출발한다. 35분 정도 진행하여 노고단에 도착한다. 어두운 밤이지만 노고단정상에서 잠시 사진을 찍고 어두운 하늘을 보니 별이 보이지 않는다. 속으로 비가 오는 것은 아닐까.. 걱정스럽다. 바로 천왕봉으로 진행한다. 입구에서 진행한지 얼마되지 않아 진행속도가 엄청 느려진다.. "미안합니다"는 얘기를 하며 같은 목적지를 향해 진행하는 산우님들을 이리저리 추월, 부지런히 진행하여 여명이 깃든 삼도봉에 도착 증명사진을 찍고 잠시 다른산님과 얘기 후 바로 출발한다. 화개재까지는 지리산 구간 산행으로 다녀본 경험이 있으나 그 이후는 처음으로 가보는 코스다. 화개재를 지나면서 자연스레 4명의 선두그룹이 형성되어 부지런히 진행한다. 어슴츠레 밝아지는 날씨에 주위를 살펴보니 온 천지를 덮은 구름 속을 내가 헤치고 나가는 것같다. 토끼봉, 명선봉을 지나 구름이 뒤덮힌 연하천산장에 도착.. '내가 언제 여길 와보았나' 하는 생각에 기념사진을 찍고 일행과 아침식사를 마친 후 우리보다 하루전 출발한 1박 종주팀이 묵고있는 벽소령산장을 향해 부지런히 진행한다. 어두운 밤에 출발할 때는 몰랐으나 지금은 내가 구름을 헤치며 간다는 것을 확연히 알 수 있다. 인간은 자가당착에 사는 동물인가?.. 서유기의 손오공, 동화 속에 나오는 신선이 된 기분이다. '비록 더 넓은 지리산의 조망을 하지 못해 아쉽지만 덕분에 쉬운 종주를 한다..' 이렇게 내 자신을 위로하며 부지런히 진행한다. 1시간 정도 진행하여 1박 종주팀이 머물렀던 벽소령산장에 도착한다. 먼저온 우리팀이 머물렀다는 생각에 정감이 간다. 기념사진 찍고 일행과 더불어 간식을 먹고 휴식을 취한 후 다음 목적지인 세석산장을 향해 간다.. 40여분 정도 진행하니 전설이 깃든 그 유명한 선비샘이 보인다. 모두 자연스럽게 배낭을 내리고 선비샘 물맛을 보며 마셨다. 성삼재에서 출발한 지 6시간이 다되어간다.. 아직도 가야할 목적지가 저 멀리 있는데.. 연하천산장을 지나면서 부터 이어진 너덜길은 끝이 없이 계속되어진다. 육산인 지리산이 우찌 설악산보다 바위가 이렇게도 많은지... 잠 못자고.. 산행로 걷기 불편하고.. 피로감을 느끼면서도 오로지 천왕봉을 가야한다는 의무감으로 발걸음을 부지런히 옮긴다. 영신봉을 지나면서 한 산우님 잠시 쉬고 진행하겠다는 무언의 행동을 한다. 같이 쉬지 못하고 계속 진행하면서 '전쟁 중 부상당한 전우를 홀로 남겨놓고 우리만 살려고 가야하나?'하는 그런 생각에 미안한 마음이 든다.. 하지만 우리라도 빨리 목적지에 가야 한다는 의무감(?)에 잠시 쉬는 산우님을 뒤로 하고 계속 진행한다. 세석을 가기위한 마지막 관문인 영신봉을 지나면서 또 한 산우님이 계단 앞에서 쉬고 싶다 한다. 젊은산우 뒤따라 힘든 계단을 오르고 부지런히 진행하여 드디어 세석산장에 도착한다. 지난번 한신계곡으로 올라와 세석, 천왕봉을 한 경험이 있어 젊은산우에게 약수터와 비록 구름으로 보이지 않은 세석평전을 얘기 해주며.. 대구에서 출발할 때 김사장님이 산행설명을 하면서 세석에 도착하면 반드시 윤대장과 통화후 진행해야 된다는 설명이 있어 1박 종주팀을 가이드한 윤대장님을 만났다. 아는 사람없는 이 산중에서 윤대장님을 만나니 너무나 반가웠다. ◆ 세석평전을 지나면서 경사로를 올라서니 촛대봉과 이정표가 보임 ◆ 무박종주팀에서 마지막으로 세석산장을 통과하는 산우님들을 기다려야 한다는 윤대장님을 뒤로하고 우리는 장터목 산장을 향해 또 진행한다. 1시간 10여분 진행하여 장터목산장에 도착한다. 속으로 이젠 대종주의 끝이 보이는구나 하는 생각이 든다. 이곳을 처음 온 젊은산우는 빨리 가자고 재촉하는 것을 천천히 가도 50분이면 천왕봉에 도착하니 점심먹고 가자고 하며 붙잡았다. 속으로 젊음이 너무나 부럽다는 생각을 다시 해본다. ◆ 눈에 익은 장터목산장(이곳에 도착하니 대종주의 끝이 보이는 구나 하는 생각이 들었슴) ◆ 천왕봉을 가는 마지막 코스인 제석봉, 통천문 이후의 계단.. 너무나 힘이 든다. 성삼재에서 시작할 때의 체력 반만있어도 하는 생각이지만.. 앞에 가는 젊은산우를 힘들게 뒤따라 가면서 드디어 9시간 30여분에 걸처 바람에 밀려가는 구름속에 장중히 서있는 천왕봉에 도착하였다.. 천하를 다 얻은 기분이다!! 온 사방이 구름에 싸여 보이는 곳은 없지만 천왕봉 주위를 돌아보며 '힘들게 이곳에 왔습니다'라고 마음속으로 산신령님께 고했다. ◆ 드디어 천왕봉에 도착.. 지난번에 왔을 때는 정상석을 배경으로 기념사진 찍는 산님들이 많아 옆의 이정표를 배경으로 찍었으나 이번에는 악착같이(?) 기다렸다 기념사진 찍었슴^ ◆ 하산길은 너무나 조심스럽다.. 지난번 백무동에서 천왕봉을 거쳐 중산리로 하산시 무리하게 내려와 무릎을 고생한 적이 있어 천천히 내려 왔다. 중산리 매표소 입구 나오기 바로 전의 간이 수도에서 땀에 젖은 얼굴과 고생한 발을 씻고 천왕봉에서 2시간에 걸친 하산을 완료한다. 선두그룹을 한 산우님들과 길고 고생했던 지리산 무박종주를 서로 위로하는 하산주 한잔에 모든 것이 녹아 든다.. 이번 무박종주에서 체력적인 문제로 중도 포기한 산우님을 후미 가이드분이 끝까지 같이하여 사고없이 대종주를 마감 할 수 있도록 한 설악산장의 안전산행철학에 다시한번 감사를 드립니다...
